High Tide strive to work with and inspire young people on Teesside through our various schemes and programmes; raising their aspirations towards a better future while using the industry that sits alongside Teesport as encouragement.

Our Summer Scheme offers students aged 16-17 from schools and colleges around the region to take part in two-week work placements during their summer break. This year, we have managed to secure two container ship voyages which will see students from Hartlepool College and Manor Academy in Hartlepool depart from Teesport on nine-day voyages to Klaipeda in Lithuania.

The first voyage will leave on July 22nd, followed by another on the 29th, and are both scheduled to make visits to ports in Helsinki and Rotterdam en route. Students, including Ben Maness from Hartlepool College, Jake Ding from Manor Academy and Chloe Hodge and Amy Bain both from Manor Academy; will be able to go ashore at these ports to sightsee and experience the culture of all three countries.

On board, students will join the crew and will gain knowledge and insight into what is required to run a container ship from maintenance to navigation. Participants will also be asked to keep a diary of their experience which will then be used on the High Tide blog once they return.

Project Co-ordinator at the High Tide Foundation, Lauren Bywater, said of the voyage: “Everyone is extremely excited to be a part of this journey, and from the success of the Summer Scheme this year already with numbers almost doubling, things can only get better!

“We are incredibly lucky to be able to give our students these kind of experiences. They really are once-in-a-lifetime trips. High Tide works with lots of fantastic companies on Teesside that share the same vision as we do; and investing in the foundations of our future is top of the agenda for all.”
