Featured Programme – Student River Trips
This week’s featured programme is the Student River Trips, which provide students from member schools a unique opportunity to set sail along the River Tees, gaining understanding and experience of the vast number of career opportunities available in and around Teesport.
Programmes
Delivered in partnership with PD Ports, the trips run throughout the year and can accommodate up to 8 students. Taking place on board the High Tide Adventure, voyages start at Teesport before visiting the Tees Barrage and the newly built wind farm off the coast of Redcar. As well as two crew members, a guide from the Harbour Master’s Office is also on board to narrate the trip.
Teesport is the UK’s fifth largest port, handling around 36 million tonnes of cargo and over 4600 vessels per year. The port estate covers some 588 acres and is an integral element of the wider industrial area, with petrochemical, agribulks, manufacturing, engineering and high street commerce operations all supported through Teesport.
For many students this may provide the first opportunity to travel by boat, as well gain insight into industries and businesses they perhaps never knew existed on their doorstep!
One former student who took part said: “It was an amazing opportunity to meet the harbour master and his team and learn about the management of the river. This has been so educational as I had no idea of what really went on down here. This is great knowledge that I can take back with me and share with the other students.”
In addition, the port supports the burgeoning renewable energy sector on Teesside – in both production and assembly facilities – all of which utilise the port’s warehousing, logistics and excellent supply chain expertise.
We also welcome groups of staff from local schools and colleges, who would like to know more about Teesport and High Tide’s work. Please take a look at Teesport Industry Tours for more information.
